DESCRIPTION

General purpose oil-hardening tool and die steel. Outstanding safe hardening property. Easy to machine. Normal care in heat treatment gives good results in hardening with small dimensional changes. Good combination of abrasion resistance and toughness for a wide variety of tool and die applications.

Tungsten ……..0.50 Chromium ………0.50

HEAT TREATMENT

FORGING ………………1850° to 1950° F, stop at 1500° F, cool slowly

NORMALIZING ……….Do not normalize

ANNEALING ………….1450° F, furnace cool, average hardness 202 Brinell

HARDENING ………….1475° F, oil quench to 150° F

TEMPERING ……………300° to 400° F, average hardness Rockwell C-61

MACHINABILITY

Rated at 90 in the properly annealed condition. Standard of comparison is a one percent carbon tool steel rated at 100.

TEMPERING RESULTS

Specimens .250" x .375" x 2" long were hardened by quenching in oil from 1475° F. and then tempered as follows:
